The BIG Summer Read is a Victorian statewide summer reading campaign for children and young people that runs from 1 December until 31 January. We'll be accepting entries until Sunday 16 February 2025.

It is a collaborative Public Libraries Victoria initiative, developed to raise awareness and ensure ALL Victorian children have access to the resources they need to maintain literacy skills over the summer school holidays. The BIG Summer Read is open to anyone ages 0-18. It aims to encourage children to read for pleasure and addresses the issue of the 'summer slide'. This refers to the loss of literacy experienced over the long summer break if children are not exposed to books or reading.

There will be 12 author ambassadors involved encouraging kids to keep reading! Ambassadors include Andy Griffiths, Alice Pung, Ed Kavalee, and Lily Wilkinson.

You'll also find a Big Summer Read themed Scavenger Hunt in each of our branches. Fun! 

All children aged 0-18 who read/are read/listen to 10 books between 1 December 2024 - 31 January 2025 will go into the draw to win an all expenses paid birthday party for 10 at Sk8house Carrum Downs, as well as other local prizes from places such as PARC, Betty’s Burgers, Gravity Zone, and Frankston Arts Centre. There are also statewide prizes to be awarded. In addition, every child who completes the challenge will receive a certificate of completion, and a prize bag containing a badge, 2 Big Summer Read swap cards to add to their collection, PLUS a reusable silicone straw in a BSR case OR a set of BSR shoe charms (straws and shoe charms will be alternated and given at random.) Simply return your reading journal or display the completed challenge on readbooks.com.au/bsr on your device at any of our branches by Sunday 16 February 2025 to receive your prize and enter the grand prize draw. 12 Ambassador Swap Cards to Collect! 

For every 2 books borrowed from our branches, you can collect a swap card featuring the Big Summer Read 2024 Ambassadors such as Alice Pung and Andy Griffiths. Collect up to 12 cards every time you borrow! Collect, swap and get the whole set! Just show our library team your self-serve kiosk receipt or borrow straight from the enquiry desk to claim your cards. 

Special prize draw for Frankston City Libraries participants!

Completion Prizes will be available for collection from our branches from Monday 16 December.
